What is a genetically modified fruit? Is it a mere concoction of chemicals induced to make that fruit grow faster or is it way more complex or even harmful, than that.
When a fruit or vegetable gets modified with the help of genetic engineering it becomes a GM, short for Genetically Modified. GM foods are considered controversial all over the world. Some believe that GM foods can conceivably help create crops that can survive drought or help produce more nutritious food. While others believe that in the longer run, genetically modified foods have bigger consequences on the consumer’s health. This makes us question, how are GM food different from regular food? For years, farmers have been selectively breeding plants and animals to obtain maximum results, for example, breeding corns to hold more kernels or grow larger. However, this is not considered as genetic engineering. The ultimate goal of this kind of modification is to achieve traditional results. GM foods are marketed and because there is a perceived advantage either to the producer or consumer of these foods. This is meant to translate into a product with a lower price, greater benefit in terms of durability or nutritional value. Initially, GM seed developers wanted their products to be accepted by producers and have concentrated on innovations that bring direct benefit to farmers.
But now, the question is, how safe is it for consumption? We cannot escape from it but we can always choose not to consume it consciously.
We can make smarter choices by regulating what we put inside our body by purchasing local seeds from farmers and growing homemade produce of fruits and vegetables. This is surely going to provide you with a sense of satisfaction since you’re growing your own food and consuming responsibly.
